Seagate Barracuda 400 GB Internal Hard Drive

Strengths: Large size, cool temperature, and very quiet operation - topped off with an industry leading 5 year warranty.

Weakness: Speed.

This hard drive was purchased to replace a Western Digital 250gb 8mb cache hard drive, and so far I have been very pleased with everything it has had to offer. I purchased the unit during one of CompUSA's sales for $230, resulting in a price per gigabyte of $0.575. Unfortunately, the prices on the unit are selling for substantially more at this time, so you will end up paying more. Even at $300,...

Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 400GB Hard Drive

Strengths: Roomy, affordable drive with plenty of space of data or multimedia files at a relatively low cost per gigabyte.

Weakness: Access times (speed) are a bit sluggish at times, perhaps a norm for Seagate drives due to their low noise?

The 7200.8 is a great drive, combining high transfer rates with minimal noise and a low level of waste heat. This drive is perfect for use as an external portable drive, that is of course, with an external casing. With their five year warranty, it's hard to go wrong with a Seagate! (But if you do, just send it in and you'll have another right away.)

Great storage

Strengths: Massive amount of storage space, quiet, very little heat. 5 year warranty.

Weakness: Quietness and low heat means slow speeds

This drive is a good candidate for an external hard drive. It produces very little heat and is very quiet. These characteristics are perfect for something that have to be placed into a enclosure, which usually means limited air flow. These good characteristics however come with a trade off - speed. In order to have low volume and less, you are sacrificing performance. But in general, the...

Fantastic Drive!

Strengths: Extremely quiet, 5 year warranty, runs very cool

Weakness: A little slower than the competitors... but still well worth the money

I've stopped buying anything but Seagate drives. I've never had a single one of the half a dozen I have go bad and why should they with a 5 year warranty (when the other manufacturers are all dropping theirs to 1 year and making you pay more if you want a longer one) These drives are VERY VERY quiet and perfect for a DVR, XBOX upgrade, or your computer. Hard drives should not be seen and more...

Great drive for older computers with Ultra ATA 100

Strengths: Price, quiet, interface for older computers

Weakness: None that I see

Installation was same as with any internal HD - two plugs, four screws, 10 minutes. The drive runs quiet and the capacity is as expected. I bought this drive because my computer is older and requires an Ultra ATA 100 interface. This was the best GB/$ value with that interface, and I would recommend it to anyone with the same situation as mine.

Baracudda OK until it breaks

Strengths: Price, capacity

Weakness: Not rugged or reliable.

I really liked my Baracudda hard drive for 6 months until it started to buzz and suddenly I had no access to it. It had all of my business documents on it. I have a back up system but I just upgraded some programs and had not reset it. The result was $2000 to retrieve the information. Seagate was very helpful and replaced the drive and loaded my 20 GB of data. The replacement drive hums some so I...

Great Drive!!!

Strengths: quick, Large storage, quiet

Weakness: none so far

Works wonderful. I even messed up, only to corrupt the disk, but the error check managed to restore it fully with no data loss. Great buy. Very Reliable Product. I would buy it again.

Awesome performance with huge storage space

Strengths: quite, 5 year warranty, easy to install

Weakness: none

This is a 2nd 400Gb drive I have bought from Seagate. I have been using seagate drive for quite some time. This one is a great drive. Huge capacity. I use it to store my scanned dpocuments, snaps, music, etc. The drive is very quite and the best thing is it comes with a 5 year warranty. What else can I ask for.

New, Faster, Quieter: The Seagate Barracuda 7200.8

Seagate again managed to increase the performance in its latest generation of drives. The 400 GB model provides a maximum transfer rate of nearly 70 MB/s reading. That makes the ST3400832AS the fastest ATA hard drive out there today running at 7,200 RPM. Western Digital's 74 GB Raptor remains faster with its 10,000 RPM spindle speed.
