TV on PC?

Strengths: OK with cable feed

Weakness: Limited channels and gets very hot

This product would work where there is good antenna reception. Living in a major metropolitan area in California, I could get three (yes only 3) channels tuned and not with good quality at that. When I hooked up a Comcast cable, of course I could get more but I had to move the laptop close to the cable outlet or have wires and cables everywhere. Also other than the card getting really hot which may or may not be a problem, the major issue I had was the size of the files when recording. With a 20GB HD, I was still concerned about recording a 0ne-hour program. Finally, it is compatible with XP which will soon be replaced by Vista.

Good enough for me.

Strengths: Good picture quality. Reasonable price.

Weakness: Sound quality is not spectacular. Can't use webcam while using TV tuner. Get's quite warm. (not HOT, only warm)

I purchased this PCMCIA card to use with my laptop while I am in the dorms at college. As most of you can imagine, dorms are really small when you have two people sharing it. The card works reasonably well. It has TiVo like features and can record live TV as well for later viewing.

The video is pretty good. Channel changing speed is reasonable. Not really fast, making channel surfing a little slow compared to a conventional TV. It has component and s-video in so you can hook up your playstation or dvd player or something.

The sound is somewhat lacking. I can hear slight distortion if I make an effor to hear it, but that may have something due to the fact I have so much wireless stuff all around my laptop. The sound quality really doesn't take away from the TV experience however.

The enitire unit is directly under my left palm on my laptop, due to my laptop's design. It gets quite warm, but not hot. I'm sure this is not something to worry about, I often have it running for hours and it doesn't get overly hot.

Overall, I would recommend this as a substitute for a TV. NOT A REPLACEMENT. While the picture quality is quite good, it's not quite like rear-projection TV's.

avermedia good/bad

Strengths: Watch TV on your laptop, play PS2 on it without lag, listen to radio. Very easy to install.

Weakness: the screen resolution is bad when you fullscreen it. cant really play a game like that...

I got the card, and i was so excited. but when i started it, and played a game, i had to play on a lower resolution. But it serves its purpose, watching TV.

Avermedia, MTVCARDBUS

Strengths: Easy to install

Weakness: Very, very warm. Shuts off

This card was easy to install like a million other items on the market. However, a Quick Install doesnt impress me much anymore. give me quality that works and I'll spend all night hooking something up if it lasts. This card gets really warm and shuts off when its too hot. Probably wont last. I'm not taking a chance so Its going back.. Sorry..

Keeps Shutting Off

Strengths: Can't get it to stay on long enough to see if any..

Weakness: Poor quality product...

This is my third one in two days. When I take it back tomorrow, I'll just get a refund this time. The software that came with the card doesn't work, so you have to DL it from AverMedia's website, then the card will work fine for 2-3 minutes then shuts off. I've tried three different units on two diffierent machines running XP and got the same results. Will have to try and find something better. :(

Gotta have TV on your laptop right away? Here's what...

Strengths: A snap to install and use -- virtually idiotproof. Does just about everything you'd want and takes little expertise to do so.

Weakness: Glitchy scheduler and safe hardware stop/removal are bad marks against an otherwise near-perfect product.

After bad experiences in past years dealing with video interfaces, this was a welcome relief. Installation lives up to the Plug & Play concept. Hooked it up to my cable TV and, presto!, was watching shows on my laptop.

Scheduler is confusing, especially the interface to TitanTV.com, but in the long run that can be figured out. One big thing that does need fixing is release/stop of hardware -- you can click on "safely remove hardware" and/or AverMedia's equivalent thereof and still wind up with a blue screen requiring you to reboot. But it's nothing permanent -- after reboot you're fine.
