Ximeta NetDisk Portable Network Hard Drive

Strengths: Excellent price around $70.00. Great product for Network sharing, web hosting

Weakness: Require new software download. Functionally none.

Very nice design and product performance. Easily upgradable to higher capacity. Works for multiple read/write when used by multiple users, just require to upgrade software available from XIMETA.

Very good price and performace. Also works great over wireless network within office or home.

Ximeta NetDisk Portable Network Hard Drive

Strengths: Portable, works fine as a USB drive. Can replace with another drive.

Weakness: requires special software to be installed on each pc wishing to access it, performance is so so, heats up alot.

I was hoping this drive would support standard networking protocols such as windows file sharing so that I could simply hook it up to my network and any device that could access a windows share(ie pc, xbox, mac, linux pc) would be able to see the drive as a network share. No luck, it requires special software to be installed on each client machine to access it so it is worthless to me. Stay away if you are hoping to use it as a windows share device. USB works but for the price I paid I could buy an enclosure and an internal larger hard drive for less.

It's not "worthless", drama queen. You just take the 30 seconds to install on each of your clients, you lazy @ss!

Nice network drive for all your sharing and...

Strengths: USB + Ethernet, Spin down feature. Great sharing software with all security concerns accomodated.

Weakness: none

1) Ideal and inexpensive network drive. Also can be used as USB drive.
2) Software (new version available for download from Ximeta.com) is just all you need for multaccess share over secure network.
3) Backup software is included for making auto backup functions and combination of operations.
4) Mine was newer version which has spin down feature allowing drive to be stopped after 5 minutes of non-use, which definately extend the overall life of drive.
5) Customer service is amazing. Write a mail and in few hours you will have reply. Call them and they will answer every question with intelligent way.

Very happy with purchase. Paid only $40 for such a nice drive.

Ximeta NetDisk Portable Network Hard Drive

Strengths: Easy to use, Network Drive

Weakness: Like any hard drive, these drive can die any time and you are at high chance of loosing data.

Installation on network out of box was somewhat hard. Software installation was giving error saying that it cannot write on some dll file in windows system. So i did not understand what was going. But i simply update my windows to latest patches using microsoftwindows update. And then i tried software installation again and everything went cool at breeze. The data transfer between drive and computer was at 100mbs/sec through wireless network. If you use USB connection it would have been 108mbs/sec. But now i just copy my stuff from laptop on the netdisk and when i am on desktop i access the stuff from netdisk. SO you are free from inserting USB Drives or cds to copy stuff from your one computer to another.

I love this drive and every penny is worth. I got at good price from officemax. This drive is useful for someone who have 3 or more computers in home and who needs to share data or play MP3..One more cool stuff is that you can replace drive inside enclosure and upgrade to larger drive for your needs.

Dear Jayshrikrishna1,

What do you mean with "100mbs/sec" ?

"m" means "mili", are you trying to say Mega "M"?
"b" may means "bit", are you trying to say Bytes "B"?

and what means "s/sec"?
"s" is already "seconds", so, "seconds by seconds"?

Even so, thinking about 100MBps (One Hundred Mega Bytes Per Second), it is too fast even for wireless, so, something is not right with your numbers.

See, a regular Ethernet LAN runs on 100Mbps (One Hundred Mega BITS per second). The TCP/IP protocol uses an average of 14 bits per usefull transfered byte, so the regular LAN using the regular CAT-5 cable and RJ45 connectors can transfer no more than 100,000,000 / 14 = 7.1 MBps (Seven Mega Bytes per Second).

how come you got 100M"something"s/sec ???

Ximeta NetDisk Portable Network Hard Drive

Strengths: Ethernet feature. Easy to setup. Quiet to run.

Weakness: Make sure update with most current driver otherwise there will be network access limitations.

I owned a 120GB version right now. This is exactly the same except smaller storage space. I am going to replace with hard drive with larger storage space in the future if needed. I was drawn with its Ethernet feature. Very useful.

Ximeta NetDisk Portable Network Hard Drive

Strengths: The network ability is very nice. It is upgradable to a larger size hard drive as well. Relatively fast read/write.

Weakness: I've heard it has problems with overheating and killing the drive inside.

Overall, I think this drive is very decent for an external network hard drive. It is fast, quite and gets the job done. Perfect substitute for a network fileserver that doesn't require a power-sucking pc on 24/7.

Ximeta NetDisk Portable Network Hard Drive

Strengths: Acts as Wireless Drive,You can open the box and upgrade default 80gb to 250gb drive. The enclosure is aluminium, so the drive is noiseless and do not need fan.

Weakness: Manual is friendly, But to setup as wireless drive takes time and some basic computer knowledge. You should know how to deal with firewall on your computer and some other basic setup.

I got this drive from Officemax at their sale for cheap price. Its worth paying price for such a good device. But since most drives have average 1 year life which comes inside Netdisk, I recommend that at end of year you should check your drive status and replace with new drive before it goes dead and you loose your precious data. Google to find different hardware forums which shows how to upgrade your drive.

Now i had windows 2000 and Xp computers and the drive was recognized easily. No trouble connecting in usb mode.Setup as network drive was little painful. You have to install their basic software on all computers for drive to be accessible.

This drive is not recognized by linux and MS-DOS ...So if you looking for drive for this kind of platform think before you buy.

Wish you best of luck on your quest.

Ximeta NetDisk Portable Network Hard Drive

Strengths: good device for saving and transporting large amounts of data, works great as a USB drive

Weakness: heats up a lot, connection via ethernet can be buggy

I got this on sale after a $100 discount, so the pricewas definitely right. The idea of having a newtork HDD is great as you can have multiple users accessing the drive. Unfortunately, the implementation of this is not yet fully worked out for the Netdisk. I had trouble accessing the drive from my laptop, but not from my desktop. Additionally, you do have to install software in all the computers so you can access it as a network drive. Due to the hassle, I am now just using it as a USB drive, and as a USB drive, it works fine.

It does heat up a lot after prolonged use, so I wouldn't recommend that you keep this on all the time. I think it is better utilized for the ocassional data back-up, or for transferring data to and from different computers, where you don't have to keep it on all the time.

Ximeta NetDisk Portable Network Hard Drive

Strengths: Easy to use, Network Accessible,Faster than most other external USB removables.

Weakness: It supports only one user writing at a time. Drives must be install on the laptops/desktops to share this drive.

I always wanted to buy an external drive because External drives are perfect for backing up data and storing files like MP3s. They are quick to install and portable from computer to computer. I chose NetDisk because it supports many different file systems from OS X (FAT32), Windows (FAT32 & NTFS), and Linux (FAT32 & NTFS). The disk comes with NTFS as a default file system. Using this drive is very easy.

Drawbacks: It supports only one user writing at a time. Drives must be install on the laptops/desktops to share this drive.

Ximeta NetDisk Portable Network Hard Drive

Strengths: NDAS, Price, Direct Networking

Weakness: Connection is getting lost quite often

Netdisk the very first external hard disk which implements Network Direct Access Storage. I like the following features in this external drive:
1. Direct Networking
2. High performance
3. Plug-n-Play Portability
4. Controlled Security
5. Efficient Heat Transfer System.

The only drawback I see with this drive is, with my wirless network I am getting connect lost quite often. Otherwise If you want a shareable, network external hard disk, this is the solution.

Ximeta NetDisk Portable Network Hard Drive

Strengths: Price?

Weakness: Poor manual. Symantec V2i backup software a limited version, no recovery disk (buy for $35) no multi computer capability (buy for $300) and you must pay for Symantec tech support.

Box and documentation does not make it clear that bundled software is actually a limited version and though they call it a Network Drive, can only backup one computer with the bundled Symantec software. The supplied CD has no recovery utility. When I complained to Ximeta they told me that I don't have to use the bundled Symantec software
Update- 2/23/05: Bought the fullup version of Symantec Live State Recovery and have experienced many lockups on my laptopfor the first time since I bought the laptop over a year ago.
